There is no luchadora in real life called La Mala — but she exists on every page of Las Malas, a novel by Camila Sosa Villada. A book about women who have been pushed to the edges of everything: society, safety, love. And who survive anyway, with a ferocity that feels almost magical.

This painting is for them. For the ones who carry implausible stories and keep going — not despite the weight of them, but somehow because of it. Sosa Villada writes with a raw, poetic magic realism that hits like nothing else, and this horse wears her mask in their honour.

Las Malas is one of the books that has moved me most in recent years. La Mala is my answer to it.
